Bret graduated from Lakeville North in 2007. He played baseball at Iowa Central from 08-09. At Iowa Central, he posted a 2.70 ERA with 71 strikeouts and 61 innings. He went 6-3 with five complete games and two shutouts. He was named First-Team All-Region. Bret transferred to Minnesota State-Mankato in 2010 and got drafted in the 12th round to the New York Mets where he spent five years with their organization. In his minors career he posted a 3.25 ERA in 86 games. He had 11 saves and he pitched a total of 183 innings and was Pitcher of the Year in 2011.
