Starters Coaching Staff and Trainers
The Starters Sports Training staff have played and coached at every level, including the Major Leagues. Each member of the Starters coaching staff brings their own experience and level of expertise that makes Starters Sports Training the most well rounded training facilities in the state.
Ryan Schwertman - General Manager
Ryan graduated from Lakeville High School in 2000. After high school, Ryan attended Minnesota State University, Mankato before transferring to the University of Northwestern, where he finished his final two years as the Eagles' third basemen. Ryan has 15 years of coaching experience at the Youth, High School, Legion, Club, and Collegiate levels, including three years as head coach at Prior Lake High School from 2009-2013. Currently, Ryan is working as a recruitment advisor with Elite Sports Advising and as an Associate Scout with the Cincinnati Reds. Ryan and his wife Kerrie live in Shakopee with their three children: Addison (5), Jack (4), & Andrew (2).
Bryan Johns - Program Director
Bryan is a Texas native, who went to Allen High School where he played both football and baseball. He attended Howard Junior College in 2009 where he won the Junior College National Championship with a record setting season going 63-1. After Howard, he attended Vanderbilt University where he hit .370 as a Junior and played in the College World Series as a Senior. After graduating in 2011 with academic honors, he signed to play in the Boston Red Sox Organization. He played with them from 2011-14, playing up to AA with the Portland Sea Dogs. Bryan played for the Garden State Grays of the Canadian-American League in 2015, where he hit .320, and is continuing to further his baseball career.
Andy Judkins - Club Ball Director
Andy graduated from Lakeville High School in 2003. After high school he went on to play baseball at Iowa Central for 2 years, transferring to Concordia St. Paul where he played outfield and earning an All-Conference award in his Senior season. Andy has spent the last 8 years coaching collegiality most recently at Butler University. Before Butler, he made coaching stops at Southern Illinois University, Central Arizona College and Minnesota State University, Mankato. Andy and His wife Tracie live in Wayzata with their two boys Jerrick (3) and Easton (1).
Cory is a 2008 graduate from Chaska High School where he was selected to the All-State team and also participated in the Lion's All-Star Series and won MVP. He attended the University of Iowa for two years before transferring to Minnesota State University, Mankato. He helped the team make back to back DII World Series appearances finishing third and runner up. Cory also attended Augustana University where he was the Graduate Assistant Baseball Coach, under Tim Huber, from 2014-2016. In the spring of 2016, he helped coach all four infield positions to earning Gold Glove awards.
Aron played high school baseball in North Dakota earning both the Gatorade Player of the Year and USA today High School Player of the Year. After high school, Aron played baseball for the University of Oklahoma before transferring to the University of Minnesota where he was an All-American for the Gophers. After college, Aron played two season of Independent ball playing for the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks, the Sioux City Express, and the Springfield Capitals. In 2001 Aron joined the Minnesota Twins and carried the duties of their bullpen catcher for 6 seasons. After his playing career, Aron got into coaching and has been coaching youth and high school players for the past 15 years. Aron has spent the last three seasons as an assistant Varsity coach at Prior Lake High School. Aron currently lives in Minneapolis with his wife Sarah and two boys Jack (10) and Max (8).
John has a built a strong resume in baseball as both a player and coach. He graduated from South St. Paul in 2003 as an All-State LHP and an MLB draft pick by the Minnesota Twins. As a high school senior John elected to forgo a Professional contract and attend college on a baseball scholarship at the University of Minnesota. It was a decision that he believes in hindsight was the best possible decision he could have made. He spent 3 years playing for the Gophers before being drafted for the second time and signed by the Cleveland Indians in 2006. John played 7 professional seasons ultimately reaching the MLB in 2011 as a member of the Chicago Cubs. He also spent time with the Rays, Rangers, and Cardinals. Since retirement from baseball in 2013 John has pursued a coaching career while completing his College degree from the University of Minnesota.
Scott "Goose" Geisler
Goose played high school baseball at Prior Lake where he was selected to the All-State team and selected to the Minnesota Lion's All-Star Series team. After high school, Goose continued to play baseball at Winona State where he was a 4 year starters and a member of the 1998 and 2000 NSIC Championship team and Central Regional team. Goose continues to play amateur baseball going into his 15th season as a member of the Prior Lake Jays. Goose has spent the last 14 years as a Varsity assistant coach at Prior Lake High School. Goose currently lives in Shakopee with his wife Tara and two children: Brady (8) and Bella (3).
Derek graduated from Albert Lea in 2003 as a three sports athlete in baseball wrestling and football. Derek was a two time All-Conference and All-Area in baseball. After high school Derek attended Iowa Central Community College finishing their with a two year career record of 96-30 including a trip to the College World Series in 2004 where they finished 4th in the nation. Following his two years at Iowa Central, Derek transferred to University of Minnesota-Duluth.
Derek started his coaching career in 2009 as the pitching coach at Prior Lake High School. Derek has been actively involved in coaching camps and clinics throughout the metro as well as coaching club baseball for the last seven years. Derek's baseball career lead him to a front office position with the Seattle Mariners. Derek currently serves as the Vice President of ticket sales for Major League Baseball. In light of all Derek's responsibilities, he still finds time to play baseball as a member of the Miesville Mudhens pitching staff.
Zak attended Shakopee High School and graduated in 2012 where he played baseball, hockey and football. He was the starting shortstop for the Sabers, for 4 years and earned 2 all-conference and 1 all-region honors along with team MVP, best offensive player, best defensive player and was a team captain. Zak was also a three- time letter winner in both football and hockey, earning 2 all-conference and 1 honorable mention award. Zak continued his baseball career playing for the nationally ranked St. Cloud State Huskies, as the starting third baseman for 3 years. He currently holds the career home run record of 36 for St. Cloud State. He earned ABCA DII All- Region team, All NSIC Team and NSIC All- Tournament team honors. He currently plays baseball for the Shakopee Coyotes amateur team and has played for the Shakopee Indians.
Lucas was born and raised in Minnesota, he attended Academy of Holy Angels, while playing there he achieved all conference, state, metro and up for the Mr. Baseball award. After high school, Lucas received a full scholarship to the University of Arizona where he won a national championship, winner the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. After, Lucas decided to transfer to the University of San Diego where he became the Friday night starter and was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 2014. He continues to pitch for the Orioles organization.
Blake has played baseball for many years. Some of his accomplishments have been; 3 time Collegiate All-American, First Team Summer Collegiate All-American, Northwoods League Pitcher of the Year, 2 time NSIC Pitcher of the Year, 2 time Division II Central Region Pitcher of the Year, 17th Round Draft Pick for the Washington Nationals, 2013 High A All-Star and if that isn't enough he Led Washington National's Farm System in Wins in 2013.
Ashley Walker graduated from Shakopee High School in 2011. While playing for the Sabers, she was a 6 time softball letter winner, earned three all conference honors, four all section honors, two all state honors, was awarded the Athena Award, and voted the Female Athlete of the Year for her graduating class. After graduation, Ashley played softball at Winona State University and made a Super Regional appearance. During her career she was voted NFCA's DII National Pitcher of the Week and Louisville Slugger DII Player of the Week. Ashley was named an Academic All- American and Winona State University's Female Athlete of the year in 2015. After graduating college, Ashley was named the New Prague Head Softball Coach and in her first season, the Trojans won the Wright County Conference Title, Section 1AAAA Title, and made a State appearance in 2016. She was named the 2016 Section 1AAAA Coach of the year.
As a Georgia native I graduated from Griffin High School in 2008. After graduating I accepted a scholarship to Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, a junior college in Tifton,GA. After completing my Associates of Science degree at ABAC in 2010 I finished my eligibility and completed my Bachelors of Exercise Science degree in 2012 at Columbus State University on scholarship. In Columbus, GA I helped the Cougars to a Peach Belt Conference Championship and to make a regional PBC appearance as a senior. After college I started and managed three travel ball teams, South East Softball, for the South East Baseball organization based out of Athens, GA. With the help of staff we ran successful teams, agility/strength training and individual lesson programs.
Sean has played Professional Lacrosse for 12 years. A former player for the Minnesota Swarm, Arizona, Colorado and Calgary, Pollock has enjoyed an outstanding career which includes having scored more than 500 points (200 goals and 300 assists) and twice has been named a NLL top 50 player. Sean is currently the Shakopee High School Head Coach and the Shakopee Youth Lacrosse Director.
Nick Selly - Performance Director
Nick Selly graduated from Belle Plaine High School in 1999 as a three sport athlete (football, basketball, and baseball). After High School, Nick went to Winona State University where he played football. Nick graduated in 2004 with a degree in Exercise Science. With 12 years in the fitness industry Nick has specialized in many areas from sports performance, weight loss, weight gain, group training and nutrition. Whether it's building strength and size in order to compete with elite athletes or losing Weight so one can get back in shape and build confidence, Nick is passionate about helping individuals achieve goals and live the life they dream about. Nick has certifications through the International Sports Science Association (ISSA), National Association of Sports Medicine (NASM), Performance Enhancement Specialists (PES), CPR, AED, and First Aid. Ian is a 2006 graduate of Maple Grove Senior High where he was a three sport athlete (football, baseball, track)/ Ian continued his football and track careers at the University of St. Thomas and was a part of the football program's profound turnaround from a 2-8 sophomore season to an 11-2 senior season and their first playoff berth since 1990. Ian graduated in 2010 with a Marketing & Economics degree. After graduation, Ian continued his football career playing three years of amateur football for the Minnesota Sting. Ian finished his football career playing a one-game contract in the Indoor Football League (IFL). Outside of his amateur football career, Ian has worked various roles in corporate finance, operations and supply chain since graduation and has decided to change direction entirely. He plans to transition full-time into performance training and coaching high school football. He currently coaches the Shakopee High School Freshman Football team. AS a part of his transition he is currently completing his education to become a Certified Personal Trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) and is on pace for completion in Fall of 2016.
