Starters Softball Weekend Recap (January 22, 2019)
It was a busy holiday weekend for the Starters Club Softball Program as four of our club teams were competing in Martin Luther King Jr. Dome Ball Tournaments around the Twin Cities! For most of our teams, this tournament was serving as a nice little warm up for their high school seasons as well as a chance to build their team chemistry before the busy summer club season! For our 12U Little Leaguers, this served as their second to last tournament with their season officially finishing up on President's Day. Without further ado, lets see how our Ladies did this weekend!
Starters 18U Macken
The Starters 18U Ladies got off to a hot start on MLK Day going 2-0 in their first two games giving them real shot at taking home first place! In Game 1, the Starters' Ladies got a strong showing from Sydney Schott on the mound who finished with four strikeouts in 3 innings pitched! Kate Broderick kicked off the scoring with an RBI Triple in the first inning and would also ultimately score the game-winning run when she stole home to steal the game! Good Girls beat Iowa Elite 3-2!
Game 2 saw a big showing of bats from our Starters' Ladies with Katelyn Nordmeyer, Heidi Stewart, Corynn Nord, and Megan Lolling all contributing doubles while Payton Hanson belted a late triple to seal the game for the 18U Macken squad, Good Girls beat Waves 03 3-2!
Unfortunately, the hot streak would come to an end in the Championship against Midwest Speed, where Starters would ultimately lose despite another double from Heidi Stewart.
Starters 18U Macken take home 2nd Place in the MLK Day Tournament!
Starters 16U Smyth
Starters 16U Smyth kicked off their tournament action at the Dundas Dome at 12:50pm and never looked back! Buoyed by stellar pitching courtesy of all three of their pitchers, the 16U Smyth Ladies would only surrender 5 runs all day. Ashley Jahraus diced in Game 1 giving up zero earned runs on only two hits in three innings pitched! Emma Eickhoff would follow that up by only giving up 1 run (which you will learn more about later) and striking out 5 in Game 2 versus the Starters 16U Dwyer team! Finally, Payton Marker would finish off the day striking out 3 batters while giving up only one rnu in 3 2/3 innings pitched!
Anna Kelly, Emma Eickhoff, and Medora Rylee all had great performances at the plate to celebrate the holiday. Anna went 3-for-3 with 2 walks on the day, Emma brought out the boomstick racking up 2 doubles and 4 RBI's in the three games, and Medora contributed 3 hits while also wearing out the basepaths on her way to scoring 4 runs!
The Starters 16U Smyth Ladies took home the hardware winning the MLK Day Tournament Championship and outscored their opponents 14-5 on their way to a spotless 3-0 day!
Starters 16U Dwyer
Our Starters 16U Dwyer ladies had a rough start to the day in Game 1 when they faced the Rochester Royals. Caitlin Lassiter, Bre Peck, and Chloe Rozga led the team in hits in Game 1, but it wouldn't be quite enough as the Good Girls would ultimately fall by a score of 11-1.
Game 2 of the day would see Round 2 of the fabled skirmish between our 16U Smyth and 16U Dwyer team (16U Smyth took the first meeting his fall). 16U Dwyer would start the game off with a BANG!, literally, as Norah Schmitz would hit a lead-off Homerun to give 16U Dwyer the early lead! Unfortunately, that would be the only run that the 16U Dwyer team would be able to scratch across the board, and the 16U Smyth ladies would take home their second win of the series.
Despite the two losses to begin the day, our Ladies would bounce back against Le Seuer-Henderson to the tune of 8 hits in Game 3! Chloe Rozga led the team in hits going 3-for-3 at the plate as well as leading the team on the base paths with two steals! Erykka Schulte would seal the win in the fourth inning with her first big fly of 2019 as well as showing some impressive aim by hitting the homerun right to her dad over the center field fence! Good Girls win 6-4!
Starters 12U Little Leaguers
Game 1 saw our Little Leaguers taking on Prior Lake White. Corina Coppersmith got the bats going in the first inning with a single. Cameron Chard and Claire Jacobson also contributed one hit in the game. Corina and Claire combined to only give up one hit while striking out 4 batters in the game! Good Girls win game 1 by a score of 4-1!
Despite the lack of snow outside, Game 2 would see an unfortunate snowball fight in the field for our ladies that would cause a deficit which would not be overcome. Caroline Seurer and Claire each contributed one hit, while Cameron and Chayse Doering each had two stolen bases to lead the offense on the base paths. Good Girls lose 11-4.
Our ladies would rebound in Game 3, despite an early deficit, with Corina and Caroline leading the offense in hits. Additionally, Chayse, Cameron, and Sierra would all score runs to secure the victory against Farmington by a score of 5-4!
The Starters 12U Little Leaguers would take home second place in the 12U Gold MLK Day Dome Ball Tournament!
Keep your eyes peeled come President's Day weekend in Februay when more of our teams will be back in action in the last Dome Ball Tournaments of the winter! Keep pushing yourself Ladies!
